Bathtubs
This is the decade of the expanding bathroom. People are building bathrooms bigger than ever. Statistics show that the average master bathroom in a custom home built in 2007 is 85% bigger than the average custom home bathroom in 1992. One of the primary effects of the larger bathroom trend is more homes than even featuring separate bathtubs and showers. Standalone bathtubs are often large enough for 2 grown adults, and feature whirlpool massage jets and inline heaters, making them virtual hottubs. Walk-in bathtubs for the disabled and elderly are also growing in popularity as the wealthy baby boomer generation is reaching their 60s. Interestingly, even as bathrooms and bathtubs are growing, their usage is declining. Fewer people than ever take baths, although those who do are taking them for just as long. Once made from galvanized steel or cast iron, modern bathtubs are now almost always constructed with acrylic and fiberglass. The oldest bathtub ever discovered was found on the Greek Island of Crete. It is believed that this tub is over 4000 years old! Unfortunately for the Greeks, and all of our other ancestors, soapmaker wasn’t invented until after the fall of the Roman Empire.
